- Genesis: The Book of Imagination and Archetype
Inviting imagination, the Torah is a mirror in which to continually view ourselves in new
perspectives. Rabbi Victor Reinstein and Dr. Bennett Simon, a psychiatrist and
psychoanalyst, will explore the psychology and the anthropology of what it means to be
human. We will examine three archetypal stories in Genesis chapters 1-12: the Garden of
Eden, the Flood and its aftermath, and the journey of Abraham and Sarah in response to
God¹s call. Appropriately beginning our study of Bereshit/Genesis at the start of the
annual Torah reading cycle, we will draw on literature, rabbinic text and lived experience.
Rabbi Reinstein has taught and teaches widely in a variety of synagogue and school
settings, and Dr. Simon has co-taught a course at Harvard College on 'Athens and
Jerusalem: Self and Other in Biblical and Greek Literature.'
Everyone is welcome, regardless of background in Jewish learning. All texts will be
translated.
The cost is $45.00 for the series. Financial assistance is available. To register, please
send email to: rabbi@neharshalom.org.
